When a car stops to make a left-hand turn onto a side street off Belmont Boulevard, drivers behind that car consistently and illegally use the bike lane to pass on the right, creating a major safety concern for bikers, pedestrians and other vehicles. It is these stops for turns that create the gaps in traffic flow that allow for time to turn safely in a vehicle, or cross the street as a pedestrian. With Mayor Dean's push for a walkable, bikeable, healthier Nashville, and the adoption of the "Complete Streets" policy, on October 6th, Belmont Hillsboro Neighbors, Inc. and Belmont University want to raise awareness for creating safer neighborhood streets. Belmont is often cited as an exemplar "Complete Street," but with chronic illegal passing there is the potential for a serious life-threatening accident. THE EVENT – MONDAY, OCTOBER 25TH Volunteer neighbors and Belmont students will be positioned at intersections along Belmont Blvd. for one hour shifts-From 7:00AM-9:00AM AND 4:00PM-6:00PM, holding signs informing drivers that passing in the bike lane is unsafe and illegal. Yard signs will be distributed to all houses on Belmont Blvd. preceding the 25th and will stay in place until Sat., Oct. 30th. They will then be collected. Bumper stickers for all BHN neighbors and BU students will be available, and we encourage their placement on the rear right bumper. WE NEED FEET ON THE STREET! Please volunteer an hour or two on Monday and help us keep bicyclists and pedestrians safe on Belmont Blvd! To SIGN-UP, email trellals@bellsouth.net. This event is co-sponsored by Belmont-Hillsboro Neighbors, Inc. and Belmont University. PLACEMENT LOCATION- |
